From Sonia Hu’s talk
Speaker Sonia Hu: An American historian once described history as a distant foreign country, and it is difficult to reach. However diligent and learned historians may be, their knowledge of the past remains fragmentary. No one can recreate history in full. Historical accounts often follow the main outlines and overlook important details; yet those details are precisely what bring us closer to the past.
This is why I search for details. Family history is part of history, and its details reveal what makes one family different from another. Fortunately, old writings and photographs offer a very different, intimate perspective. Without either, there would be little to tell—even historians need traces before they can investigate. Tonight is my only lecture devoted to my family’s history, and I will explain everything I know in detail. My writer friend Gao Jian says that an individual’s history is also a community’s history, and later generations have a responsibility to carry forward the memories of those who came before. This is why I decided to republish this book: by uncovering this long-hidden history, I hope the people and events of the past will be remembered.
