Reverie: A Collection of Poems幻 想 詩 集 Reverie: A Collection of Poems

"Reverie: A Collection of Poems" is a profound journey of the soul, offering a unique perspective and keen perceptiveness that explores everything from the vast expanses of the universe to the subtle shifts within the human heart. Each poem is like a meticulously crafted painting, displaying rich layers of emotion and deep philosophical thought. Whether it's an exploration of the meaning of life or an ode to the beauty of nature, the poet skillfully uses their craft and emotive language to transport readers into a world that is both realistic and surreal. This collection is a literary delight and an enlightenment for the soul.

The collection is aptly named "Reverie." A "reverie" is not just a dreamlike escape from reality but also a deep reflection on and exploration of life, as well as an immersive experience in contemplation and introspection. Poetry arises from life and transcends it; thus, these poems delve deeply from the heights of faith and spirit into the worldly sufferings and boundless possibilities of the future, provoking profound reflection with each piece.

The Last Marilyn Monroe A Tale of Art, Love and Destiny

The Last Marilyn Monroe is a fictional novella inspired by factual artwork. Centered around a unique oil painting, it tells a heartfelt story of finding love and meaning in life.

Lisha, a Chinese investment adviser living in New York, is a devoted art enthusiast. Struck by the beauty and uniqueness of a larger-than-life oil painting, she devises a bold plan with the help of her family and friends to "sneak" the painting into a museum for the public to appreciate. Unexpectedly, the painting gains widespread acclaim, putting their reputations and careers at risk. The group had to undertake another daring mission—to “sneak” the painting from the museum.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of New York City, The Last Marilyn Monroe explores the intricate emotional entanglements and aspirations of its characters. As the story unfolds, the secrets behind the painting come to light: Why did a master artist choose resolution after finding his own visual language? How did a group of friends with cultural race and ethnicity diversity rediscover the meaning of love and life through a "mission impossible"?

Encounter is fate, but love is a choice. Life is filled with challenges and uncertainty, but by choosing love, we find the courage to walk through the darkest valley to embrace the light of our souls.

The Last Marilyn Monroe

The Last Marilyn Monroe is a fictional novella inspired by a real artwork. Centered on an oil painting of the same name and its distinctive visual language, it tells a story of finding love and meaning in life.《最後的夢露》是一篇根據真實的藝術作品虛構的中篇小說,圍繞着一幅具有獨特視覺語言的油畫《最後的夢露》展開,講述了一個找到愛和生命意義的故事。

Lisha, an investor from mainland China working in New York, loves art. Determined to bring her favorite painting, The Last Marilyn Monroe, into a museum for the public to enjoy, she and her friends and family devise a daring plan to sneak it inside. When the painting unexpectedly becomes a sensation, fears for their jobs and reputations lead them to decide to steal it back out.

Against the vast backdrop of New York City, The Last Marilyn Monroe explores its characters’ emotional entanglements and dreams. As the story unfolds, the painting’s secrets emerge: why an older artist who invented a new artistic language chose seclusion, and how friends of different racial and cultural backgrounds rediscover love and life’s meaning through a seemingly impossible mission.

Meeting may be a matter of fate, but love is a choice. Life is inevitably filled with difficulties and challenges. Only by choosing love can we find the courage to cross its dark valleys and feel the warmth of the soul’s light.

Dr. Shi at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Essays)

This thoroughly researched Chinese-language book guides readers through New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. Its author, Shi Xiangdong, holds a doctorate in fine arts and lives in New York. As he explains, the museum’s collections place human civilizations side by side. This juxtaposition of civilizations and knowledge resembles an encyclopedia, vividly explaining changes from making objects to making gods, from painting and sculpture to materials, craftsmanship, technology, and aesthetic taste. It becomes a multidimensional comparative history of art across time and geography, revealing how civilizations have influenced one another across different peoples.

Through close observation of objects and research into their backgrounds, Dr. Shi records his discoveries and impressions in accessible Chinese, combining clear explanations with illustrations.

The book presents only a small selection of his reflections on museum visits. Alongside personal questions, discoveries, and thoughts, it offers researchers and interested visitors fresh perspectives and points of entry. Reading it before a visit can be especially useful: at a minimum, it helps readers avoid missing exceptional works, and attentive reading may reveal deeper spiritual and cultural connections with the author.

Predestination (Poetry)

Gu Yuehua’s poetry possesses a natural unity of poetic feeling and visual beauty, perhaps shaped by her background in fine art and oil painting. In Confusion, a shadow never leaves one’s side, appearing and disappearing yet always returning. Poetry contains painting and painting contains poetry: person and shadow remain inseparable, accompanying each other through life. In Sunset, brilliant evening light draws back a magnificent curtain, while silence and darkness become the true ending after it closes. The glorious colors of dusk give way to broad darkness, turning the end of daylight—and perhaps of life—into an image we can feel and see.

The title Predestination suggests a backward glance at life. Every scene and moment seems to fulfill a promise from an earlier existence. Her brief three-line poems resemble sudden flashes of insight, illuminating the paths of life and her own reflections. The author says that love makes poetry possible: an expansive love embracing all things. A poet’s heart holds both blazing passion and entwined tenderness, the emotions of life and the insights of human experience. Whether release or challenge, these feelings inhabit her colorful poems and leave a lasting resonance.

Time of Utopia (Poetry)

Hong Junzhi: Subjective imagery gives Sonia Hu’s poetry depth, while reflections of the objective world bring life’s fragrance into that otherwise hazy inner landscape. Evening Light is one example: clouds dance into time’s long sleeves, pink persistence blossoms into memory. Such language has the flavor of a forceful combination—poetic defamiliarization. Unusual combinations make an image seem both recognizable and strange, creating a gap between familiar understanding and newly formed imagery that produces a fresh aesthetic experience. Hu uses this technique skillfully throughout Time of Utopia, without awkwardness. Her poetry was already mature in the 1980s, when most poems in this collection were written. This is especially remarkable in an era when Misty Poetry was still emerging, new free verse was finding its place, and colloquial poetry had yet to appear. Looking back, one could reasonably place her work at the forefront of Chinese poetry at the time.

With understanding, a smile, and tolerance, Sonia Hu can stand outside her poems and observe them as an object. This allows her to look calmly upon a noisy era and quietly describe the restless hearts of those restless times.

The poems from the 1980s and 1990s in Time of Utopia reveal the passions and collapses of youth in that era: a miniature portrait of its times and the emotional journeys of its young women and men.

In life’s fleeting century, only the human spirit can defy time. Time of Utopia traces an era’s inner journey, a condensed map of society’s emotional landscape. Hu’s most distinctive quality is her fresh combination of poetic language, which gives readers an unfamiliar experience of poetry. She handles weighty material with apparent ease, wrapping serious historical and social reflection in graceful language. Stepping beyond a subjective self, she describes poetic worlds from an outside perspective; many poems therefore speak from a third-person viewpoint.

What makes life pleasant? Refusing to cling to external things, seeing clearly without exaggeration, and having crossed the ocean without being captive to its waters.

Sonia Hu has achieved this.

Reminiscence of Fleeting Time (Nonfiction)

Long Publishers in the United States recently published Sonia Hu’s nonfiction collection Reminiscence of Fleeting Time. Her first dedicated volume of biographical nonfiction contains nineteen documentary essays written in recent years, fourteen of which appeared in Taiwan’s Biographical Literature journal.

Before this collection, Sonia Hu published the nonfiction biography Shanghai Forever Lost, the film essays Mirror Flower, Water Moon, the fiction collection North of Shanghai, South of Beijing, and the poetry collection Autumn Breeze and Orange Moon. She edited the poetry anthology A Reflection on Passing Time and the art collection Stone’s Mona Lisa. She received first prize for news commentary in the 2020 Overseas Chinese Writing Awards.

Sonia Hu began writing nonfiction in 2011, serializing accounts of her mother and grandmother on two Chinese-language blogging websites in the United States. The pieces were warmly received, each attracting more than ten thousand combined views. She collected them as Shanghai Forever Lost, first published in the United States in 2017. Jiangsu Phoenix Literature and Art Publishing House had planned a mainland edition under a revised Chinese title, but canceled the contract because of force majeure. The revised edition was ultimately published in the United States and distributed through Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Shanghai Forever Lost received a merit award in the 2018 Overseas Chinese Writing Awards and the inaugural Chinese Film and Television Literature Outstanding Creativity Award.

Sonia Hu recalls: Before 2011, I knew little about my father’s family history. After I began blogging on SinoVision’s website that year, SinoVision produced a program about my great-grandfather Hu Shiyu, a renowned Jiangnan scholar. They interviewed me, my uncle Hu Sisheng—a former People’s Daily reporter who also blogged on the site—and my sister Hu Rong. During the interview at my uncle’s apartment, I saw my great-grandfather’s photograph and one of his celebrated handwritten poetry collections, Autumn Wind Scroll, for the first time. Deeply moved, I wrote my first commemorative article about him and began a journey to discover my roots. From 2018 onward, I wrote and published a series about remarkable figures in my family.

Her first submission to Taiwan’s celebrated nonfiction journal Biographical Literature was an article remembering her grandfather Hu Shuyi, an educator specializing in children’s education during the Republican era. It appeared in the December 2017 issue. This marked the beginning of her family nonfiction writing and regular contributions to the journal.

In the preface, Sonia Hu writes: I have always thought of myself as an old soul, drawn to the people and events of history and to fragments of stories that move me amid its dust. Born and raised in Beijing, I loved lingering in the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace, imagining the lives and anecdotes of people who inhabited them centuries ago. I knew nothing of my own family’s history then and never imagined I would write their stories. Many years after moving to America, a chance encounter revealed my family’s past and inspired me to record what I learned. It feels like an unseen destiny. We never know who holds the course of our lives, or how its hidden workings guide us toward an unpredictable future.

New York Stories (Fiction)

Wang Yu: Sonia Hu is known for biographical writing, but her talent extends far beyond it. Her fiction is equally moving. Beijing Memories, Like Dust opens with a dusty window in Beijing and particles clearly floating in a beam of sunlight. Repeating the word dust is more than a description of scenery: it deliberately anchors the theme. In The Artist’s Lover and Wife, the triangle between artist, wife, and lover is tangled beyond easy resolution. The author thoughtfully introduces an observer, a Korean shopkeeper named Jin, whose store faces the artist’s studio. The visiting lover reminds Jin of his own first love. The touch is light, but its resonance is lasting; the character’s appearance is inspired.

Ling Lan: Bei Dao said that Chinese is the best luggage—the one possession we wanderers cannot lose on life’s journey. A friend devoted to photography once told me that even the most beautiful scenery or exciting event is as though it never happened unless captured in an image. Likewise, for a writer, a life unrecorded and feelings unexpressed in words would be a life unlived. This is especially true for someone as gifted as Sonia, who began recording life with a pen in childhood. She recalls that writing let her escape reality: she daydreamed in class and missed her bus stop, but writing gave her courage and confidence. In class and outside it, she excitedly filled scraps of paper. The innate desire to record and express is where a writer begins.

Hong Junzhi: Through the emotional lives and entanglements of men and women, Sonia Hu’s fiction explores humanity’s inborn unease and anxiety. These feelings cling to people throughout life and project themselves into the situations they encounter in society.

Rock and Palm Tree (Photography)

War zones, photography and reporting draw many journalists. To those living in peace, war may seem distant. We glimpse gunfire, life and death, and reporters crawling through smoke in scattered images on screens and in newspapers. When a photographer beside us tells us about life on the front lines as a friend would, we can discover stories hidden behind the news.

This book records the wartime experiences of Liu Jin, a Chinese photographer for Agence France-Presse. He accompanied troops to Afghanistan and Iraq three times, faced an AK-47 aimed and fired at his head, encountered a car bomb while patrolling with American forces, and went to great lengths even for a bowl of Sichuan boiled beef. Striking war photographs and extensive reporting show combat and everyday life on the front lines of the American war on terror, while deepening readers’ understanding of people caught in war’s suffering. The book also offers a vivid practical guide to war photography: equipment, exposure, and shooting positions, with valuable lessons for news photographers and photography enthusiasts alike.

Stone’s Mona Lisa (Nonfiction)

Stone’s Mona Lisa collects interviews, reports, and profiles about the artist Stone and his artistic journey. Spanning twenty-six years, it brings together much of the media coverage from 1993 to 2019, along with articles written by people around him.《石村的蒙娜麗莎》是一本關於藝術家石村其人和藝術歷程的採訪、報道與專訪的的合集。

Stone’s artistic journey and work are unusually controversial, revealing two very different phases that might be described as an earlier and a present life. The book is organized into three sections. Earlier Life: Taiwan and Earlier Life: New York use journalists’ interviews and reports to recount the sensation he created in Taiwan between 1993 and 1995, his path to becoming an MTV host, and his life and artistic ideas in the early 1990s. Present Life: Beijing and Present Life: New York draw on writers from the media and other professions to document the development and rise of his new artistic language, Stonecube. In Stone Speaks, the artist describes his own growth and the influence of art and music on his life.

In May 2019, five centuries after Leonardo da Vinci, Stone drew on his return to faith in God to reinterpret the classic Mona Lisa using the artistic language of Stonecube. Reimagining the portrait five hundred years later, he created a pinnacle of Stonecube and transformed Leonardo’s Mona Lisa into Stone’s Mona Lisa.2019年5月,正好是達芬奇誕辰500週年,石村憑藉他對上帝的迴歸,用「石村塊」的藝術語言重新創作了達芬奇的經典油畫作品「蒙娜麗莎」,再現了「蒙娜麗莎」500年後的形象,成爲「石村塊」的巔峯之作,也將達芬奇的蒙娜麗莎徹底轉換成爲了石村的蒙娜麗莎。

The preface was written by Stone’s longtime friend, poet and painter Yan Li. The afterword was written by publisher Sonia Hu, formerly a producer of MTV’s Tian Lai Cun.

To highlight the originality of Stone and his work, the book takes an unusual editorial approach: outsiders’ perspectives appear alongside the artist’s own language and understanding. Together they trace an extraordinary life and reveal different facets of his artistic journey. Filled with unusual experiences and engaging stories, the book also explores life’s ultimate purpose and meaning through art, presenting Stone’s world through both human and spiritual dimensions.

Stone’s Mona Lisa was edited by Sonia Hu and Hong Junzhi and jointly published by New World Press in the United States and Long Publishers.《 …

Shanghai Forever Lost (Biography)

Yan Li, poet, writer, and painter: History is a jigsaw puzzle. Different texts and narratives make each period more complete and clear, allowing humanity to learn from human nature and institutions as civilization gradually accumulates. Yet pieces are often missing, or some prove fabricated after the puzzle is assembled. This is tragic, and everyone who lives in society bears responsibility. I therefore welcome rigorous, conscientious accounts of history, especially those that give it the breath of life through ordinary people’s experiences. Sonia Hu’s Shanghai Forever Lost portrays living individuals amid dramatic historical upheaval: a trustworthy piece of the puzzle. If more people record the present promptly and truthfully, later generations can reflect alongside our texts, giving hope for better social institutions.

Wang Yu, writer and poet: Through one family’s story, the book leads readers into history and into themselves. The author’s vivid prose brings back what has disappeared and allows it to live on.

Fan Haitao, biographer and founder of Haitao Oral History and Biography Studio: Almost a year ago, my New York friend Sonia Hu gave me her biographical manuscript. Exhausted as a new mother, I had no time to read it. Only when she recently asked me to write a preface did I read it closely. Afterward I called her in excitement. The writing was deeply moving and dreamlike, with echoes of Eileen Chang and Yan Geling. For me, it captured the fraught relationship between mother and daughter: indebted to each other, yet depending on each other throughout life. We are all products of time.

Shanghai Forever Lost records ordinary lives against the sweeping backdrop of old Shanghai. Through the author’s grandmother and mother—their experiences in Shanghai from the 1920s through the 1940s and in Beiping in the 1950s—it depicts the city’s past and the impact of historical change on individual lives. This biography condenses ordinary people’s experiences amid the histories of Shanghai and Beiping. Opening it is like opening a time capsule: time reappears, history speaks, and the past comes alive.
