My Journey to the West: Zhan Hou Xi You Ji

About this book

Educator Hu Shuyi’s observations of postwar travel in Europe and the United States were first collected in Shanghai in 1948. Originally published as articles in newspapers and magazines, they preserve his impressions of places and people encountered during a period of historical transition.

This reissue adds family photographs from the 1930s and 1940s, a biographical essay about Hu by his granddaughter Sonia Hu, and her new foreword. Travel writing and family archives together introduce an earlier generation’s view of the world and the life behind these accounts.
