Born in Beijing to a Shanghai family, Sonia Hu moved to the United States in the late 1980s and earned her master’s degree in Television Production from Brooklyn College, City University of New York. Early in her career, she worked with major broadcasters including China Central Television (CCTV), CBS, and MTV Music Television, where she served as a producer for MTV Asia and participated in the production of Tian Lai Village, one of the earliest music television programs broadcast in Mainland China.
Since 2012, she has been actively engaged in curatorial practice and international cultural exchange. Her curatorial projects include the 2013 New York solo exhibition Congratulations and Prosperity by Chinese American artist Stone Chun Shi, the 2023 exhibition Flow State, the large-scale group exhibitions Being Present: Memor Invitational Exhibition of Contemporary Artists and Spring Awakens New York: 2025 New York Chinese Artists Exhibition, as well as the 2026 exhibition StoneCubes: The Initial Language of No-Time Consciousness and the Toronto exhibition 49 · Dreams Beyond, held at Todmorden Mills Museum in Canada in 2026.
Hu’s curatorial practice explores the relationships between time, consciousness, memory, and visual language, emphasizing art as a reconstruction of spiritual experience and cultural structure. Integrating literary narrative, cinematic language, and historical awareness, she is known for creating immersive exhibition experiences through layered spatial structures and narrative pathways. Her work consistently engages with cross-cultural expression and the role of Eastern spirituality within contemporary art discourse.
Beyond her curatorial practice, Sonia Hu is also a writer and documentary filmmaker whose work spans nonfiction, biographical literature, and visual storytelling.
